“The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled.”
— Plutarch
My teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that education should empower students to become self-directed learners capable of navigating their own educational journey. This belief stems from my experiences working with first-generation college students and my observations of the diverse challenges faced by them, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds.
Theoretical Foundation: Self-Determination Theory
To foster an engaging and supportive learning environment, I utilize Self-Determination Theory (Ryan & Deci, 2000) and my research grounded in this theory (Ju & Pak, 2024). This framework posits that students are intrinsically motivated when three basic psychological needs are met: autonomy, competence, and relatedness. By addressing these needs, I aim to foster an inclusive classroom that supports all students, regardless of their background or circumstances.
Promoting Autonomy To foster student autonomy in the classroom, I provide recorded versions of face-to-face lectures for challenging subjects, such as HR analytics using regression analysis with statistical software. This allows students to review the material multiple times at their own pace, enhancing their preparation for exams and assignments. Understanding that traditional office hours may not suit all students, especially those with work commitments, I offer flexible office hours. This includes evening Zoom sessions, accommodating a wider range of schedules, and ensuring that all students, including working professionals and those with family responsibilities, have equal access to support. These approaches aim to give students more control over their learning process, allowing them to align their academic responsibilities with their individual circumstances. By providing these options, I strive to create an environment where students can take ownership of their education while receiving the necessary support to succeed.
I think this course was really interesting and the strengths are that the material is easy to follow along to. Professor Sunjin was one of my top two nicest professors I have had in my lifetime of school which consists of five and a half years. He genuinely cares for his students, encouraging us along the way, congratulating everyone for passing his class with a positive attitude all the time. I wish I would have taken more classes with him. He always helpful and consistent with his teachings. Unlike other professors that I have had this semester, Professor Sunjin wants his students to succeed and he does his best with ensuring we do. Thank you for a wonderful class. (Fall 2020, Collective Bargaining)
Strengthening in Competency I enhance students' confidence in achieving their goals through a multi-faceted approach. Recognizing the challenges historically underrepresented students face in applying analytical skills in management courses, I have implemented an innovative approach using generative AI. I guide students in using Python code supported by AI to conduct regression analyses in organizational behavior and human resources management courses. This method enables students to apply advanced analytical techniques to real-world projects, such as estimating job performance scores and employee turnover intention at individual and team levels using survey responses. By integrating AI technology, I make complex analytical concepts more accessible and applicable for diverse learners, enhancing their confidence and competence in data-driven decision-making. Also, recognizing the diverse learning styles and strengths among students, I employ holistic evaluation methods. Some students excel in written assessments, while others shine in presentations, traditional exams, or collaborative teamwork. By offering various assessment options, I enable each student to showcase their unique abilities, fostering confidence in their capacity to make meaningful societal contributions. These strategies are designed to bolster students’ professional development, enhancing their confidence and competitiveness in their chosen fields.
This kind of Professor (Dr. Pak) is the future of learning, and makes learning a fun and challenging with material that actually helps students be prepared for the real world.. (Spring 2023, Human Resources Management MBA)
Very energetic and cared a lot for students. Tried to make the course more interactive and get more hands-on participation from students. (Fall 2022, Human Resources Management)
Extending Relatedness To strengthen students' connection to the campus, I implement team-based learning and simulation activities in class. These foster collaboration and shared success. Discussion questions are designed to cover course content while allowing students to share personal experiences, deepening peer connections. Since 2022, I have been an advisor to the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM) Student Chapter at CSUB. This role has allowed me to engage with students in various capacities, including hosting biweekly chapter meetings and participating in student recruitment efforts such as the Fall Volunteer Fair. We have organized Guest Speaker Events such as "Introduction to Amazon Operations Lunch and Learn" and "Introduction to Target Operations Lunch and Learn" to inspire our students. These events give students the opportunity to hear from professionals with similar backgrounds, boosting their confidence and motivation. Funding of over $2,500 enabled us to provide lunch boxes from Panera Bread, making the events accessible to all students. Every Fall semester, student members volunteer at Kern County SHRM Annual Conference. These experiences are especially helpful for students from underrepresented groups, giving them practical exposure to their field and opportunities to expand their professional networks.
Making it engaging with the groups and teams that we had in class. Made it fun and learning the material was easy and understandable. (Fall 2023, Human Resource Management)
I would recommend Dr. Pak. He sees the big picture by helping his students be prepared for their future careers in HR. (Fall 2023, Staffing)
As an educator, I am committed to creating an open, supportive, and welcoming atmosphere that addresses students’ needs for autonomy, competence, and social connections. By doing so, I aim to help students succeed academically and prepare them for fulfilling careers and lives beyond the classroom.
